PROJECT
I designed and developed hybrid interactive experiences for ESPN’s Fifty50 initiative celebrating the 50th anniversary of Title IX.
Despite Title IX having been long entrenched as law, women still face discrimination both on and off the sports arena.
Celebrated athletes were chosen for their excellence in their sport, for their advocacy of women’s rights, and for their perseverance in spite of discrimination.
SERENA WILLIAMS
The first interactive piece highlighted Serena Williams advocating for women's rights and defying expectations with her iconic outfits.
My role included concept ideation, asset creation, motion graphics, content architecture, and integration.
MEDIUM
The client was in possession of one of Serena’s iconic outfits. They wanted to display it like you would in a museum while also telling the story of her journey in an engaging way.
Technology provided an excellent solution to this: an 8' tall lightbox, with a transparent touch screen for navigation instead of glass. With this, I created an interactive museum window display.
CONTENT
The interactive display informed guests about Serena’s story, outfit timeline, and public reactions to them, emphasizing the contrast between negative and positive comments.
The journey is visualized by a moving path that intertwines with the physical outfit behind the window. The path contains interactive nodes for each major event Serena participated in. Each node animated to highlight each event along with media coverage and public response.
Jimmy Pitaro, Chairman, ESPN and Sports Content
“This is an important milestone for Title IX and we wanted to find creative ways to celebrate it across ESPN and the Walt Disney Company”
Wyomia Tyus
“This is wonderful.”
WYOMIA TYUS
The second piece celebrates Wyomia Tyus and her activism.
Consisted of an exciting edit of her accomplishments and her story, displayed as one composition on three separate screens.
Tyus herself attended the opening event and witnessed this piece celebrating her.
For this experience I provided the concept direction, the video editing and motion graphics.
INNOVATION & IMPACT
Using cutting edge technology like the transparent touch screen and leading digital signage media players I brought forth the stories of women who, despite dominating in their chosen sports, had to fight further for equality and women’s rights.
